"Sundial (Day and Night)" is the first work I made while temporarily living in upstate NY along the Delaware river. I was so taken by the quiet and expansive yet simple view of the river backed by small mountains that I couldn't continue making the same work I had been making, which has been fueled by anxiety, chaos, and self-deprecating humor. Watching the movement of the sun and moon and changing speed and color of the river became my solace from all of the uncertainty, grief, and tragedy unfolding across humanity on a global scale. The understanding of time itself began collapsing, and depicting the only visual things that actually determine the passage of time to humans (the sun and moon) in the same plane accurately described my perception of my place in the world.
